This guide covers the base Tails sprite's abilities and strategy. The Cheat Master Tails variant shares the same core mechanics with an additional theme bonus.
Mid-Air Hover: Controlled Flight in Fortnite
Tails enables hovering after a jump — staying airborne and moving horizontally rather than immediately falling. Activate by holding jump after the peak of your jump arc. The hover lets you cross gaps that would normally require a glider, maintain elevation above opponents, and control your descent to land exactly where you intend. Unlike Jackrabbit's second jump (which gives height), Tails gives sustained elevation — you trade height for duration.
Hover Speed Scales With Level
At Level 1, hovering movement is slow — useful for gap-crossing but not fast enough to reposition quickly during a fight. By Level 5, hover speed is significantly improved, enabling faster directional changes mid-air and making the hover useful as an active dodge tool rather than just a traversal aid. Max-level Tails lets you move with enough aerial speed that opponents struggle to track you during the hover duration.
Elevation Advantage in Zero Build
In Zero Build, height equals power — high ground forces opponents to shoot upward (worse accuracy, exposed body) while you shoot down. Tails provides high-ground access without ramps by extending hang-time after any jump. Reach a rooftop edge, hover across, land on top. It's slower than Jackrabbit's instant second jump but allows more precise placement — you can hover and scan before committing to a landing spot.
Gap-Crossing Utility
Tails is uniquely strong in named POIs with multi-story buildings close together. A gap too wide to jump normally becomes trivial with a hover. This makes rotation between adjacent buildings entirely ramp-free — useful in build mode where conserving materials matters and essential in Zero Build where the alternative is a long ground-level detour. Players who know a POI's building layout benefit most from Tails' hover range.
Collaboration Sprite and Pairing
Tails is the second Sonic-universe collaboration sprite alongside Sonic. Thematically, Sonic provides horizontal ground speed while Tails provides aerial mobility — the same dynamic as the characters themselves. Epic rarity at 3,000 Sprite Dust. If you're running the Sonic skin, the Tails sprite is the natural aerial complement. Mechanically, Tails pairs well with scoped or sniper weapons where elevation and patient positioning matter more than raw damage output speed.
