About Fortnite Special Sprites
Fortnite Special sprites aren't a separate rarity — they're themed re-skins of base sprites in five collectible flavors: Gold (metallic yellow, prestige), Gummy (translucent candy), Galaxy (cosmic purple/blue), Gem (crystalline), and Holofoil (rainbow foil, unreleased). Every Rare, Epic, Legendary, and most Mythic base sprites have Special variants, adding up to 68 collectible variants across the entire Runners season (45 released, 23 upcoming).
Mechanically, Special variants have the same effect as their base sprite — Gold Ghost cloaks on reload exactly like regular Ghost. What Special variants give you is cosmetic prestige: they render with distinct visual effects in-match, they show up prominently in your Collection screen, and completing a full theme (all Gold, all Gummy, etc.) is a recognized collector achievement in the community.

How many Special sprite variants are there in Fortnite?
There are 68 Special variants across five themes: Gold, Gummy, Galaxy, Gem, and Holofoil. 45 are currently released; 23 are unreleased or upcoming. Not every base sprite has every theme — Gold and Gummy are the most complete, Gem is limited to about 7 base characters, and Holofoil is still partially unreleased.
Do Special sprites have different effects from base sprites?
No — Special variants share the exact same ability as their base sprite. Gold Water's effect is identical to regular Water's. What Special variants add is cosmetic prestige: distinct visual effects in-match, a decorated Collection entry, and community bragging rights.
Which Special theme is the rarest?
Currently Holofoil — several variants are still unreleased (Epic is dripping them out season-by-season). Gem is the next-rarest actively-obtainable theme, limited to about 7 base characters. Gold, Gummy, and Galaxy each have 15+ variants and are the most complete themes.
How do I unlock Special variants?
You must first own the base sprite, then complete the variant's specific unlock condition — which varies by theme (Gold requires reaching Max Level with the base sprite, Gummy requires seasonal event participation, Galaxy is a Sprite Dust summon at high cost, etc.).
